One of the main reasons that I am a Christian is because of the historical evidence for the life of Jesus Christ. I believe that the claims that the Bible makes about Jesus being the Son of God are more than adequately supported by other historical sources. As a result of this, I am always interested when I see a new book about the historical evidence for Jesus, so I had to buy “Jesus: The Great Debate” when I saw it in my local Christian bookshop.
Jeffrey covers a wide range of topics in this book, each of which gives a separate argument for Jesus being who he claimed to be – the promised Messiah, the Son of God. He takes the reader through such topics as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Shroud of Turin, evidence from a wide range of sources, and details of the prophecies of the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled in his life. His approach is immensely readable, and I found myself wanting to go back to the book almost as soon as I put it down to see the next argument. It left me in little doubt that Jesus is who he claimed to be.
I felt that there were some weaknesses in the book, mainly a lack of detail concerning the opposing views surrounding Jesus. At times I wondered if he was simply writing what his audience, which, presumably would be mainly Christians, wanted to see. By that I’m not suggesting that his argument was not good – it most certainly was – but it would have been useful had he acknowledged more readily the counter arguments. By doing so, he would have enabled Christians to have a better grasp of their argument when confronted by people asking questions or seeking debate over Jesus. Having said that, there is a great deal in the book that would help Christians in this – probably more than most people will ever need.
This book will interest you if you are interested in finding out more about Jesus, especially if you’ve just become a Christian, and also if you want a little more information about Jesus to help you evangelise effectively.
In conclusion, I have no qualms in recommending this book to you. It has helped answer many questions that I had in my mind, and I’m sure has equipped me with plenty of information when I evangelise.

As part of our active lifestyle of prayer and Bible reading, we are currently reading a small section of the Bible together each day and sharing our responses to it with each other. We also publish a short devotional thought on a key verse or two from each day's passage to prompt prayer or reflection.
