Rebuilding the Matrix

In recent years, much has been made of the so-called ‘conflict’ between science and religion. Many people seem to believe that with the advancement of science comes the death of religion, with well-known atheists such as Richard Dawkins expounding this point of view in works such as “The Blind Watchmaker.” “Rebuilding the Matrix” seeks to show that the conflict between science and religion does not have to exist, that reconciling the two is possible.

The major perceived conflicts between science and religion are covered, beginning with the early Greek philosophers right through to present-day naturalists. I found this to be very informative: did you know that the roots of modern science were actually born out of religion? The history of science is intertwined with religion in many places: the alleged ‘conflicts’ were more to do with philosophy than religion.

One thing I particularly liked about this book was the attention to detail. Alexander must have spent much time researching all of the quotes and sources. He does not make unfounded claims, but makes logical arguments that are backed up with quotes and data. You can tell that Alexander is a scientist! Alternatives are considered and possibilities explored before the conclusion is reached, based on rational argument and not ‘religious feeling’, as some people may say. In other words, this book contains a good intellectual treatment of the subject matter and not just arguments based on religious presuppositions!

Alexander also looks at the metaphysical claims of science: can religious thought be extrapolated from pure investigation of the natural world? Is it right that naturalists should use evolution as evidence for us coming into being without the aid of God? These questions are handled well and I certainly feel a lot clearer on the issues surrounding them! This is definitely worth reading if you are interested in the debate between creation and evolution.

This has to be one of the best Christian books relating to science and faith that I have ever read. After having read it I feel a lot more confident about the relationship between science and faith, and what my attitude towards science should be as a Christian for the 21st Century. Too long has the myth been propagated that science and religion are in conflict!

I would say this book is a must for all those who are interested in science. It gives a thorough overview of the issues and topics involved in a manner which the layman can understand.

What's On Crossring

Crossring is a community of Christians who meet together online in fellowship around the Christian faith and the Bible.

As part of our active lifestyle of prayer and Bible reading, we are currently reading a small section of the Bible together each day and sharing our responses to it with each other. We also publish a short devotional thought on a key verse or two from each day's passage to prompt prayer or reflection.
