Lee Strobel was the hard-nosed, tenacious law correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. The combination of his legal and journalism training ensured that he was the kind of person not at all satisfied with easy or illogical answers and he could spot someone ducking a question a mile off.
As a firm atheist but a believer in rationality and logic (i.e. considering all the evidence before coming to a conclusion) and so he set out, rather unobjectively it must be said, to prove that Christianity was without foundation. His investigation led him to reach a very different conclusion, and as a result he came to faith.
‘The Case For Christ’ recounts the steps of his investigation including questions such as “Can we trust the Gospel accounts as historically accurate?” “What corroborative evidence is there for the historical person of Jesus?” “Did Jesus fit the bill as the Messiah as revealed through the Prophets?” “Did Jesus himself identify himself as the Messiah and Son of God?” and “Did the Death & Resurrection of Jesus really happen?”
The answers may seem bleedingly obvious to any Bible-believing Christian but as growing opposition mounts to Biblical truth both inside and outside of the Church, this book is an invaluable resource to affirm the logic and reason of trusting in God’s Word. Strobel, through his intensive questioning of a series of esteemed academics in the relevant field, raises awareness of the opposing arguments we are likely to face, whilst the Academics’ responses help to build our confidence in God’s word and understand how to respond to these arguments.
Now, if you’re thinking that sounds way to heavy for me, then think again!!! Some of the material does take several reads for it to sink in, but Strobel’s use of a variety of conversational and narrative style make this read more like a dialogue than a vastly complex theological work. Rather than struggling through the lines and lines of obscure theories and technical information, it feels as though you are sitting in on a conversation between two very engaging, intelligent and passionate people.
This is also a superb book to lend to non-Christian friends who are asking the kind of questions above … if they’re willing to be open and objective about it, that is!!! I now have 2 copies of this book just so I can lend one out to friends!!! I cannot recommend this book more highly …
Buy it, read it, lend it!!!
Crossring is a community of Christians who meet together online in fellowship around the Christian faith and the Bible.
As part of our active lifestyle of prayer and Bible reading, we are currently reading a small section of the Bible together each day and sharing our responses to it with each other. We also publish a short devotional thought on a key verse or two from each day's passage to prompt prayer or reflection.
