It was several months ago when I first heard about Mel Gibson making a film about the last few hours of Jesus’s life, and to be honest I was not really sure what to think. Everybody knew who Mel Gibson was, a famous actor turned director who had recently found God in his life. But as well as all that there was reports about his strong Catholic belief and some of their ideas as well as the mental state of his father who had made some disturbing remarks.
For me I was more worried that this film would be a “Hollywood Production” and may be quite cheesy, but after seeing this film I can say that it is none of them. We arranged through our youth cell group that we would all go together so we arranged a time and day and set off to see this film that has been talked about so much in the last few weeks. As we were sitting in the full cinema waiting for the film to start I was aware that the film was very graphic and gory and I am someone who is not particularly good with those kinds of films, so I was wondering how many times I would look away.
The film started and from then to the credits I was completely glued to the screen and managed to watch every minute of it. The film took away any Hollywood-ish or cheesy thoughts, it portrayed exactly what happened to Jesus in the last few hours before his death. Starting in the garden as Jesus is praying to God in desperation to where he stands before the Sanhedrin and before Pilate and then finally when he is crucified and rises from the dead. All the scenes were made very well and were in accordance with what happened from Judas betraying Jesus and killing himself to Peter denying Jesus three times. I also felt the film ended very well and was not dragged out, in fact the time seemed to go really quickly!
You can however see the Catholic influence as Mary is one of the main characters apart from Jesus and seems to be in most scenes and the constant use of cloths and wiping the face with the cloth, but that still does not take away the message of the film.
I felt the film was very well made from the scenery used to the actors used to play the disciples and Jesus. One surprise for me was a character that played the devil who was lurking around throughout the whole film. The acting was of a good quality and the whole film seemed so real, so much so that at points I nearly stood up and shouted ‘stop it! Leave him alone!’ A lot of the dialogue used is taken word for word from the scriptures and you can feel the emotion throughout. The film is graphic and when I talk to people about the film especially non-Christians they say ‘Oh it’s very gory or it’s very graphic’ Well last time I checked the Roman’s were not nice people and treated their victims in horrible ways and being Crucified was never pretty. In this film not like others made like Jesus of Nazareth, the scenes are very gory especially when they are flogging him, which goes on for some time.
Sometimes it takes something like that to really speak to people and it’s funny how a film that’s so graphic and gory has reached so many people. I know for a fact that several people in my town have become Christians from seeing this film and that proves that it is getting the message across and that God is using this film to convict and speak to many people.
So what else can I say about this film, If you have not seen it yet, go see it! If you have seen it, talk to people about it. I was blown away by the whole film and came out of the cinema feeling quite strange, you can read the story over and over again but it’s not until you see it visually that it opens it up so much more. When the film did finish the cinema was quiet and people were still sitting in their seats well after the end just completely overwhelmed by the film. It will be interesting to see how many people actually see this film and the things that will follow on from it, all in all a great film.
